Worship songs about prayer are plentiful today, thanks in part to the ongoing popularity of worship music, and artists that produce it.
As a worship leader, your job is to find worship songs around certain themes. Your pastor might be teaching on prayer this Sunday, or you might just want to focus on it for a time as the worship leader or worship pastor.
I’ve compiled a list of the best prayer-themed worship songs. By best, I mean:
- They are biblical
- They are relatively easy for a worship band or individual to learn and play
- They are easy for a congregation to learn and sing
If you know of additional worship songs about prayer, drop them in the comments.
The Lord’s Prayer. Artist: Hillsong. Album: There is More
This could be the best worship song about prayer of all time, simply because it converts the Lord’s Prayer into a song, keeping the words almost identical to Scripture.
Our Prayer. Artist: Rend Collective.
This song is reminiscent of Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (NIV) It talks about using prayer as a weapon or a force for change on earth.
Talking to Jesus. Artist: Elevation & Maverick City ft. Brandon Lake. Album: Old Church Basement
At its core, prayer is just talking to Jesus, isn’t it? I love how this song uncomplicates prayer and makes it something anyone can do. Whether this is your first day as a believer or you’ve known Him for 50 years, you can learn about prayer from this song.
Sweet Hour of Prayer. Hymn by William Walford and William B. Bradbury. Performed by Casting Crowns
This song describes the time we can spend with Christ in personal prayer and quiet time. Those who have made a regular appointment with Christ can identify with the song’s message. For those who haven’t made that a priority, this song encourages that regular prayer time.
Open the Eyes of My Heart. Artist: Paul Baloche
The Bible has many instances where someone’s spiritual eyes are opened. That’s the goal of prayer — to open our eyes and see Christ.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Of all the worship songs about prayer on this list, this is perhaps the most direct. “Take it to the Lord in prayer” is the central theme. Whatever you or your church is going through, good or bad, it’s always a good plan to take it to your friend Jesus.
When We Pray. Artist: Tauren Wells. Album: Hills and Valleys
Here’s a great upbeat song about prayer, which is surprisingly hard to find.
What if His People Prayed? Artist: Casting Crowns.
Another upbeat tune about prayer. I’m not sure how it would work as a worship song, but it could be a great worship opener, especially if your church is in a sermon series about prayer. It revolves around 2 Chronicles 7:14, one of the central passages about prayer in the Bible.
See You Again. Artist: Anthony Evans. Album: Back to Life
While not directly about prayer, this song is a powerful telling of what happens when we seek God. The sick are healed and the dead rise. Anthony Evans delivers perhaps the most powerful worship song on this list.
Battle Belongs. Artist: Phil Wickham
As the song says, “So when I fight I’ll fight on my knees / With my hands lifted high / Oh God the battle belongs to You.”
I’m Listening. Artist Chris McClarney ft. Hollyn
I love this worship song about prayer because prayer shouldn’t be just lobbing requests to God. It’s also about listening. You have to be quiet enough during prayer to see what God has for you, which this song explains perfectly.
The Blessing. Artist: Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes
I’ll leave you with this absolute gem of a song, which is itself a prayer from the Word of God. It’s a blessing to all who pray it and hear it. What a fantastic way to welcome or send out your church.
